Give your budding paleontologist the chance to dig up their own fossils with this fun and easy project. Perfect for warm spring and summer days, this activity keeps kids active and engaged outdoors. Even younger children can enjoy this adventure with a bit of supervision.
Help your child knead the clay until it's soft and easy to work with. Form the clay into several balls and then flatten each one into a disc about 1 inch thick.
Brush a thin layer of petroleum jelly over the top of each clay disc. This prevents the bones from sticking to the clay.
Take a chicken bone and press it firmly into the clay disc. Carefully remove the bone, leaving an impression behind.
Allow the clay to harden completely. Repeat the process with different bones to create more fossils.
Once the fossils are ready, hide them in the sandbox or at the park. Give your little paleontologist a paintbrush and a specimen bucket for their exciting fossil excavation!
This hands-on project not only sparks a love for exploration but also makes learning about dinosaurs and fossils a thrilling experience. Happy digging!
