Shadow Art Fun

Shadow Art Fun

Jul 11,2024

Preschoolers love to draw, and parents love the creativity it unleashes. Drawing isn’t just fun—it’s great for developing fine motor skills. Using chalk helps your child learn to grip small objects, which will enhance their ability to handle pencils, crayons, and scissors.

Plus, it’s perfect for outdoor fun in the summer sunshine!

Add in a bit of kindergarten physics (light and shadow), and you've got a fantastic activity that blends art and science, nurturing both the artist and the budding scientist in your little genius.

What You Need:

  • Chalk in several colors (a wider diameter works best)
  • A washable, smooth, outdoor surface
  • Early morning or later afternoon summer sun

What You Do:

Find Your Canvas:

Grab your chalk and your child, and head outside to find a good spot. Make sure it's sunny, not shady, so you can create sharp shadows.

1.Explore Shadows:

Help your child find their shadow. Let them see how their position and movements affect the shadow. Talk about where the sun is and how it creates the shadow. Encourage them to make fun shadow shapes on the ground. Demonstrate a few fun shapes yourself—kids learn by watching!

2.Trace the Shadow:

Once your child has found a great shadow, have them hold still while you trace it with chalk. Then switch roles and let your child trace your shadow.

Add Details: Get creative and add fun details to each other’s shadows. A top hat, a superman cape, or a pink tiara—let your imagination run wild! The sillier, the better!

3.More Shadow Play:

Still up for more fun? People make great shadows, but so do trees, toys, and pets (if they can sit still for a few minutes). Let your child lead the way in finding other subjects to trace. This shadow play might just spark an interest in scientific discovery or inspire some unique artwork!

Enjoy the combination of art and science with this sunny, shadowy activity!
