Splashy Poolside Science

Splashy Poolside Science

Jul 11,2024

Summer is here, and with the rising temperatures, it's the perfect time for some splashy science fun! Turn your backyard into a mini science lab with a kiddie pool and everyday kitchen items. Your little one will love experimenting with water, and they'll be learning about science and math without even realizing it!

What You Need:

  • Yogurt containers
  • Paper cups
  • Small pitchers
  • Kitchen measuring cups
  • Spoons
  • Plastic bowls of different sizes
  • Empty milk or juice containers
  • Old shampoo bottles

What You Do:

1.Set the Scene:

Fill up the kiddie pool and place all the containers, spoons, and cups nearby. Let your child explore these items independently for a while. They'll naturally start experimenting with the water and containers.

2.Join the Fun:

After some time, join in the play. Start asking questions about the containers and their volumes. Use simple terms like more, less, and equal to introduce basic concepts.

3.Explore and Compare:

  • Compare two containers to see which one holds more and which holds less.

  • Find the container that holds the most and the one that holds the least.

  • Estimate how many of the smallest containers can fit inside the largest one.

  • Line up the containers from least volume to greatest.

  • Find two containers that look similar and test to see if they hold the same amount.

  • Discover how the width and height of a container affect its volume.

  • Fill each container once and pour the water into a large bucket to see how much they hold together. Estimate how many of a particular container it would take to fill the kiddie pool.

By engaging in these activities, your child is not just having fun but also building a strong foundation in science and math. They'll learn about measurement, volume, and comparison while enjoying the cool water on a hot summer day. It's a great way to beat the heat and sneak in some learning!
