Get ready to bring back the classic taste of Great-Grandma’s old-fashioned lemonade with a fun twist! This hands-on activity allows your child to enjoy the delightful, homemade flavor of summer all by themselves, creating a refreshing treat that’s perfect for warm weather or reminiscing about sunny days once the season has passed.
Not only is this activity fun and delicious, but it’s also an exciting way to introduce your child to basic science concepts. By following a set of steps, making predictions, and observing results, your little one will engage with the scientific method in a playful and delicious experiment!
Cut a lemon into quarters and remove any seeds.
Place one quarter of the lemon into a zip-closure bag.
Pour 1/2 cup of water into the bag.
Add about 1 teaspoon of sugar.
Zip the bag securely. Gently mix the contents for about 30 seconds, making sure to squeeze the lemon pulp.
Open a small section of the top of the bag and insert a straw. If you’d like, add a couple of ice cubes to chill your lemonade.
Gather all the ingredients and tools, and ask your child what they think you’ll be making. Have them make observations about the ingredients and predict what will happen during each step.
Encourage your child to describe what they see, smell, hear, taste, and feel throughout the process.
For a picnic treat, prepare the lemons and sugar in zip-closure bags before you leave. Add water at your destination for a refreshing, homemade beverage on the spot.
This easy and interactive activity is sure to become a favorite summer tradition, combining fun, learning, and delicious homemade lemonade!
