One of the joys of summer is hunting for seashells at the beach. But even if you're far from the coast, you can still bring the seaside magic home with this delightful shell craft. Perfect for little marine biologists, this activity combines creativity with some basic science skills like sorting and identifying. Plus, your child will end up with a beautiful treasure box to store their precious finds!
Pour out the seashells onto a clean surface and invite your child to sort them. They can sort by size, type, or color. Discuss the different characteristics of each shell as they work.
If you have a shell book, use it to identify the different types of shells. How many can you name together?
Pull out the plain wood box and craft glue. Lay out the shells in a mosaic pattern on the lid of the box. Encourage your child to pull from the sorted piles to create their design.
Once the pattern is set, help your child glue the shells onto the box. If using a hot glue gun, make sure to supervise closely and assist as needed.
Ask your child to describe the pattern they created. What makes it a pattern? How did they decide on the arrangement?
This charming craft not only nurtures creativity but also reinforces key science skills. And the best part? Next time you find a special shell, you'll have the perfect place to keep it!
