Watermelon isn't just a tasty treat packed with vitamins A and C; it's also a great tool for helping your little one develop fine motor skills, number sense, and color and shape recognition. In this fun summer project, your child will create a watermelon-inspired piece of art while snacking on the real thing. It's a delightful way to blend snack time with craft time!
Start by talking about the watermelon. Slice it open and examine the colors. Ask your child what color they see on the outside and inside of the fruit. Discuss the seeds and their different types.
While enjoying the watermelon slices, ask your child to guess the number of seeds in their slice. Help them count the seeds as they eat. Compare the guess with the actual number. Set aside the seeds for the craft.
Draw a straight line across the middle of a paper plate and help your child cut along the line to create two halves. This activity is great for practicing scissor skills. Discuss the shapes of the plate before and after cutting.
Take one of the paper plate halves and have your child paint the ridged outer rim green to represent the rind. Then, paint the inner portion red to represent the fruit.
Once the paint is dry, help your child squeeze dots of glue onto the red section. Place the watermelon seeds onto the glue dots. Picking up the small seeds is excellent fine motor practice. Count the seeds together as they place them.
Allow the watermelon art to dry. Display the finished piece proudly!
This craft not only promotes creativity but also combines learning and nutrition. It's a wonderful way to spend a summer afternoon, and who knows? It might inspire more fruity creations!
