My First Book for Dad

My First Book for Dad

Jul 11,2024

Father's Day is the perfect time to combine learning and creativity with a special project that will make Dad's day. This activity is an excellent way for your little one to practice their letters while celebrating all the wonderful things about their father.

Let's get started on this fun and meaningful activity!

What You Need:

  • 6 sheets of white legal-size paper (8-1/2”x14”)
  • 1 sheet of colored construction paper, 12x18”
  • Stapler
  • Markers
  • Digital photographs (optional)

What You Do:

1.Make the Book:

  • Start by cutting a cover from the colored construction paper. Make it slightly larger than the legal-size paper (about 9-1/2”x15”). Fold it in half horizontally to measure 7-1/2”x9”.
  • Fold the legal-sized paper in half to measure 8-1/2”x7”. Insert these pages into the folded construction paper, and staple along the fold line to secure everything together.

2.Design the Cover:

  • Have your child write “ABC Fun with Dad” on the cover. They can either draw a picture of Dad or glue a photograph—bonus points if it’s a picture of them together! Don’t forget to have your young author sign their work.

3.Create the Alphabet Pages:

  • On the top of each page of the book, have your child write a letter of the alphabet, from A to Z. If they’re just starting out, capital letters are great. If they’re up for it, include lowercase letters too.
  • On each page, your child can draw a picture of something Dad does that starts with that letter. Does Dad play tennis? That’s T! Does he love swimming? That’s S! Enjoy watermelons in the summer? There’s W!

4.Work in Stages:

  • Remember, this is a big project for little ones, so it’s okay to work on it a few letters at a time over several days. Each letter and sound they learn, each word they draw, helps build their literacy skills while creating a heartfelt gift for Dad.

This project not only helps with letter recognition and phonics but also creates a lasting memory that Dad will treasure. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to spend some quality time together!
