Sun Prints for Kids

Sun Prints for Kids

Jul 11,2024

Summer is the perfect time for kids to explore light and shadow! Combine the magic of science and art with this fun sun print activity. Sun prints, one of the earliest forms of photography, use the sun’s rays to create silhouettes on paper. With this easy project, your child can discover how different objects interact with light, using simple construction paper.

What You Need:

  • Construction paper (cheaper, fade-prone paper works best)
  • Solid objects/shapes (household items like coffee cans or cardboard cutouts)
  • Sunshine

What You Do:

1.Make a Guess

Ask your child to guess what will happen when part of a piece of paper is covered with an object and left in the sun. Will the covered part stay the same or change? Write down their predictions.

2.Explore Light and Shadow:

Go outside and observe how light and shadows behave. Move from sunny spots to shaded areas, like under a tree. Have your child describe what they see and feel as they move from light to shade.

3.Set Up the Paper:

Place a piece of construction paper on a flat surface in direct sunlight. If rain is expected, do this on a windowsill or a table near a sunny window.

4.Find Fun Shapes:

Help your child find objects around the house with interesting shapes. Solid items like coffee mugs or cans work well. For more variety, draw and cut out shapes from dark construction paper or cardboard.

5.Create the Design:

Arrange the shapes on the construction paper, leaving some areas uncovered.

6.Sun Exposure:

Let the paper sit in the sunlight to fade. The time it takes will vary depending on the weather and the paper. Periodically lift a corner of a shape to check the progress.

7.Reveal the Artwork:

Once the paper has faded enough, remove the shapes to see the beautiful sun prints!

Try this activity in different seasons to see how the time needed for fading changes. Add a variety of shapes to create unique and fun designs!
